The scheduled post for this week was the fifth question to get to personal and leadership clarity, “What’s most important, right now?”.
The focus of the post took a significant turn last Thursday when I had the privilege to participant in the 20th Global Leadership Summit that was hosted by Willow Creek Community Church outside of Chicago, IL and their senior pastor, Bill Hybels.
The most important thing right now for me, and I invite you to join me in setting this priority for yourself, is to…
Fully step into my role as a leader and build up those around me to be a leader
As Bill said in his opening talk, “Everything that matters in this world rises and falls on leadership. “
Will I be dad to my kids and a leader?
Will I be a husband to my wife and a leader?
Will I be a service provider to my clients and a leader?
Will I be a member and administrator of some tasks in my church and a leader?
What’s the difference in all those cases? The difference is…
- A leader has a grander vision and treasures people even more than that vision
- A leader has a sense of urgency about the great things in life and that there is a lot at stake
- A leader fosters an environment of inspiration
- A leader actively invests in others
- A leader makes a legacy play
I choose to be a leader and an unabashed servant leader at that. As Patrick Lencioni proclaimed at the Summit, “I’m tired of hearing about servant leadership, because I don’t think there is any other kind. Everything else is just about economics.”
What do you choose today?
Put in the terms above, it can be an uncertain and scary proposition.
Louie Giglio, in the final talk of the Summit, addressed this beautifully, “Sometimes you’re just trying to lead…but you just – don’t – know – what – to – do. You don’t have to know everything about getting up the mountain ahead of you to know how to take the next step.” Take the next step. Lead your family. Lead yourself. God is all over it!
