Here’s part of a recent conversation I had with Jessica Levin, President of Seven Degrees Communications. Jessica is an experienced leader in for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. We dove into the subject of burnout. While the focus of the questions was volunteer leaders and team members, the principles (and experiences) are similar to paid employees and leaders. Watch this short video and then check the bottom of this post for a 60-second routine to head-off burnout.
What to do when burnout happens in a team member:
To prevent burnout before it happens, use this Mini Timeout Routine from high performance expert, Allon Khakshouri. Practice this twice a day, especially when things are getting overwhelming or share it with a team member if you notice that they’re heading in that direction:
- Find a quiet spot and close your eyes for 30 seconds.
- Slow down your breathing, and when you feel ready, count 10 long breaths.
- Then set an intention for your upcoming situation, and visualize yourself overcoming any obstacles so that you eventually achieve the result you desire.
- Spend a few seconds experiencing the positive emotions that you would enjoy following a successful outcome.
- Finally, open your eyes and make your final preparations for the upcoming situation.
You can also use this routine as preparation for when high performance is required.
