I had the privilege last week to attend the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership annual conference in Indianapolis. There’s so much to tell about what I’ve learned and what servant leadership can mean to how business is done and the difference it can make for people, the bottom-line, our community and our world.
The one highlight I wanted to quickly share is a story told by Rebecca Braden Nordeman, President of Cornerstone International, about her friendship with a Himalayan Sherpa, Jangbu. Rebecca recounted a conversation with him during his time in the US. He was perplexed by the way Americans greeted each other with a “Hey, how are you?” Jangbu told Rebecca that in his native Tibet they greet each other by pressing their palms together and with the words “Tashi Delay.” The words mean “I Honor the Greatness in You.”
Rebecca challenged us to genuinely “Honor the Greatness” of everyone we encounter and to discover and develop the gifts, talents, and strengths that emerge from the “Greatness” in those we are privileged to lead.
